The Gondoliers

Presented by IllyriaTheatre Ltd

Running time: 2 hours 20 minutes, including a 20 minute interval.

Suitable for 8+

charity. comedy. family. live music. opera. play. poetry. storytelling.

Set in picturesque Venice, this light-hearted operetta will whisk you away to a world of blissful romance, barbed satire and comedic chaos.

Two charming gondoliers, Marco and Giuseppe, suddenly find themselves elevated to the status of royalty. Each tasked with choosing their Queen from a bevy of beautiful women, hilarity ensues when the rightful Queen arrives demanding to know which of the men is her husband.

As the plot thickens and the absurdity reaches its peak, love triumphs, and the gondoliers discover that happiness lies not in noble titles but in the simplicity of true love. The witty lyrics of Gilbert and catchy melodies of Sullivan are expertly brought to life by Illyria, who have been captivating audiences all over the world for more than thirty years.

Performed in the great outdoors, The Gondoliers promises an enchanting evening of laughter, music, and will leave you with a song in your heart. Featuring impeccable comedic timing and exuberant performances this is one Illyria production not to be missed.

What audiences and press have said about other Opera Anywhere Mozart productions:

‘Thank you all so much for a completely outstanding performance of The Magic Flute on Friday… the packed audience was completely delighted with your approach to this wonderful work. As you know, we had several youngsters (aged c.6-8) who were lapping up their first opera – bringing on the next generation of opera lovers.’

Anthony Pinching, Director at Pinner Music Festival, The Magic Flute, 2018

‘Sunday night can be judged an unqualified success and everyone had a wonderful time… One retiring, retired audience member declared it the best night’s opera he’d ever seen, having been drawn into the whole performance by the intimacy of it all. At least two other members of the audience had come along – not quite under duress – and had left completely converted, waxing lyrical about the performance they’d just witnessed.’

Andrew Forsyth of North Westmorland Arts, The Magic Flute, 2016

“The best we have ever heard!"

Mary and Ian Ibbotson - Dorchester Audience, The Magic Flute, 2022

The Massive Tragedy of Madame Bovary

The Massive Tragedy of Madame Bovary

Presented by Ha Hum Ah and The Minack Theatre

Running time: 2 hours 20 minutes, including a 20 minute interval.

Suitable for 12+

charity. comedy. family. live music. opera. play. poetry. storytelling.

Emma Bovary is bored. She’s bored with her boring doctor husband, bored with her boring provincial village and bored with her role as a dutiful wife in (boring) nineteenth-century France. But Emma reads novels. Lots of novels. And in novels, life is much more fun… Now, four actors battle hilarious mishaps and misbehaving props to tell the (massively) tragic story of Madame Bovary.

Laugh and cry in equal measure as Emma Bovary chooses the wrong husband. Lose yourself in mesmeric love scenes featuring a stupendous collection of devastatingly handsome men. Question the impotence of women in a patriarchal, Victorian society (if you want). There will be vermin, visual absurdity, wild animals and a nun.

Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary was published in 1856, prosecuted for obscenity and hailed as the greatest novel ever written.

Flaubert’s complex novel is given a refreshing shake up in this irreverent, irrepressible, and irresistible play.

By John Nicholson, based on the novel by Gustave Flaubert.

  • Contains strong language and mature themes

  • Suitable for age 12+ (parental guidance)

Patience

Presented by Opera Anywhere

Running time: 2 hours 15 minutes, including a 20 minute interval.

Suitable for all

charity. comedy. family. live music. opera. play. poetry. storytelling.

Together with the very generous support of The D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust, Opera Anywhere are delighted to be bringing

you their new show Patience.

This is a high-spirited tale full of misplaced desires. There’s Reginald Bunthorne, the rakish, sulky ‘so-called’ poet with whom all the village maidens are besotted.

Unbeknownst to them however is the fact that he doesn’t even like poetry and not only that, they find, he’s in love with Patience the milkmaid!

Now Patience only has eyes for Archibald, a real poet who is just a little too perfect to marry. Meanwhile, a regiment of Dragoon Guards arrive perplexed to find the village maidens, who they were due to marry, very much disinterested.

Oh dear! Will everyone find their wished-for suitor? Join us for this lively

operetta that playfully pits the strict morals of the Victorian era against the

passionate indulgences of 1870s Aestheticism.

Reviews:

“Great production. Act one finale is my favourite G and S moment. I shed a tear or two in the sextet. Well done.”

D Martin, Lewes
