Sustainability Policy

Sustainability runs to the core of Thorington Theatre. From the first carpenters sketch of its design to its current operations, the Thorington Team are constantly asking “how do we minimise our environmental impact?”

We, of course, must recognise that everything from the products we serve and our energy supplier to our choice of marketing materials and waste disposal have an environmental impact. As such, we double down on our efforts to proactively nurture and protect the theatre’s beautiful forested surroundings and the species within it.

The Theatre

Built from locally coppiced Sweet Chestnut wood, the theatre is a vibrant example of climate friendly building techniques. The wood used to build the theatre not only serves as a carbon store in itself, but through the coppicing process new growth is promoted and the life of the chestnut trees is extended.

As the theatre was built on an existing crater, no excavation was needed. Allowing us to avoid the use of heavy, fuel-hungry excavation machinery.

Being made of wood and the British weather being what it is, the theatre does require regular maintenance. During maintenance we follow the same principles of using locally sourced and coppiced wood, and local carpenters and skilled workers.

The Bar

At Thorington Theatre, we review our supply chain on an annual basis to assess whether the snacks and drinks we serve are as sustainably produced as possible. Our preference is for local companies that seek to minimise their greenhouse gas emissions, reduce their packaging and positively support the regional economy.

Future Plans

We seek to conduct a carbon footprint calculation of Thorington Theatre’s seasonal greenhouse gas emissions. From assessing our energy use and waste disposal to the distance travelled by our audience and visiting performers, we will establish a clear picture of our current environmental impact. The results of this carbon footprint calculation will inform our sustainability policy moving forward.
